NOTE: If you register for any single race, and then decide to join the series as a scoring entrant, that must be done by December 31 of each series' season.  We are getting far too many entrants still thinking that just running in four races qualifies them to score and/or get a seed time for the finale.  It confuses our scorer all to heck.

TENTATIVE entry fees for 2019-2020:

  • Visit Super Jock ‘n Jill after November 15 to sign up and get your race shirt and bib in advance!

Please – if you sign up online after 9 a.m. PST on the day before a race, print your receipt and bring it with you to the race registration.  At some point, our registration volunteers need to prepare their lists for use that weekend!

Series substitute number (You should be bringing the series bib number issued to you with you for EVERY series race – if you don’t, we charge you for a new one) – $2.00.  LET'S SAY THIS AGAIN -- your series number is your number for all six races!  Bring it with you or be prepared to pay $2 for a substitute number!

For single races, we have a pre-sign-up on-line or you can pay a little extra for a race day bib.  If you use the on-line pre-sign-up, you must be signed up for a single race 24-hours in advance or use the same print-it-and-bring-it method outlined above for series entrants.  LET'S SAY THIS IN ANOTHER WAY -- if you sign up AFTER 9:00 a.m. on the FRIDAY before the race, YOU NEED TO PRINT A COPY OF THE RECEIPT ON PAPER AND BRING IT WITH YOU!

All races are at Magnuson Park except the track races in early February which are at the Nathan Hale High School Track.  The Magnuson Park races all begin near the beach comfort station and bathroom building on the Waterfront Promenade.  Enter the park on NE 65th Street and turn onto Lakeshore Drive at the stop sign.  Follow Lakeshore Drive to the beach area.  Remember that — on road race days — the angle parking along Lakeshore Drive is blocked for the route, so parking really close to the start fills up fast!

The address for the actual site in Magnuson Park is 6505 Lake Shore Promenade, Seattle, WA 98115

The address for Nathan Hale HS is 10750 - 30th Ave NE, Seattle, WA 98125, although the track is on the southwest corner of the traffic signal at 35th Avenue NE and NE 110th Street, and the best parking is next to the track on the west end.

Starting Times

All single races start at 9 a.m.  The first heat of the track races at Nathan Hale starts at 9 a.m.  If the size of a road or cross country race grows to more than we can handle at a single finish line, we will divide it into two events by competitive divisions: all women and girls, and men over 60 will run in the second race at 9:20 a.m.  That way we keep the age competitions in the same race.

How to Compete

Come early enough to check in and get your bib, or to register if you need to!

Pin your bib on the FRONT CENTER and OUTSIDE of whatever you are wearing. We need to see it as your cross the finish line!

Line up when we call for the start, with faster runners at the front of the start area and slower competitors at the back.

Run the prescribed course.  The road course is a simple loop done twice.  The cross country course is also two loops -- it is a bit more complicated, but always well marked with plenty of small white, orange, and blue flags, and orange traffic cones.  The track "course"... well, we have yet to lose anyone on the track "course!"  (Please don't try!)

Note your time on the clock as you pass the finish line at all races.

Follow the directions of the chute personnel as to your finish order in close finishes.  Run ALL THE WAY THROUGH the finish line and the chute which follows, stay in order in the flagged chute, and move as fast as possible to the end of the chute to get your finish card.

At the end of the chute, you will get a FINISH CARD.  Take the place card to the announced location (at Magnuson, it is generally the breezeway between the sections of the beach comfort station.)  FILL OUT the card as completely as possible.  If you indicate a time, it should be from the clock, not from your personal timer, Bob. All times indicated in the results are gun times, not chip!

Final results will be done and posted to the web site within a few days.  Please inform us of anything which seems incorrect or confusing.  One of the big problems is getting youth into the correct division -- please look at that after the first race you compete in and make sure it is right!

NOTE: for the finale “chase race” the start is completely based on seed times. FOR 2019-2020, ALL RUNNERS WITH SEED TIMES WILL START BEFORE 9 A.M. We have been crowding the Magnuson Series start times with our event, and need the extra ten minutes of transition time this gives us. We also take up a lot of their parking with our course!

  • JR Juniors (Grade 11)

  • CU Community College/University

  • 20 Ages 20-29

  • 30 Ages 30-39

  • F40 Ages 40-49 for women

  • M40 Ages 40-44 for men

  • M45 Ages 45-49 for men

  • F50 Ages 50-59 for women

  • M50 Ages 50-54 for men

  • M55 Ages 55-59 for men

  • 60 Ages 60-69

  • 70 Ages 70-plus

Each division has a male and a female section.  More divisions for adults may be split into 5-year age divisions if entries warrant.  This has been done for the men’s 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, and 55-59 since 2014-15, and we are planning on it again. Ladies, the 40s and 50s are very close for you — recruit more runners in those age divisions and we will split them, too! We need to be able to sign up about ten in each half of a current division to break them up, even if we don’t finish that many.

Standings are posted after races 3, 4, and 5, and seed times for the finale are posted as soon as we can figure them out.  Check out the results page for tons of years of history.

All runners in each division, not including single race entrants, are ranked and awarded points, with 10 for first, 9 for second, down to 1 for tenth.  One point is also given to all finishers in that division not in the top ten.

You must finish four races to score.  If you run more than four races, your best four point totals count toward your standings.  A perfect score is 40, and we are continually devising special ways to embarrass – err, honor – someone so dominant in their division! For 2019-2020, there will be a certificate award for perfect scores AND a certificate for Winter Warrior Men and Women / Boys and Girls who participate in ALL SIX RACES!

In the case we have to apply tie-breakers, the winner would be the person who runs more races.  If still tied, the winner would be the runner with a higher place in a fifth race or in the fifth and sixth races combined.  We generally don’t have to go beyond those tie-breakers. And if we have prizes laying around, we don’t break them at all — we just give out duplicate awards!

Please note: after each race 4, 5, and 6, it becomes apparent that some people will not or did not run and finish (and/or turn their card in!) for the minimum four races.  At that point, we remove them from the races they did run, and re-score the division for that race.  Points can change wildly toward the end of the season.  Also, even if you are the only person in your division, you must finish four races to claim a prize.

Series Prizes

Thanks to Super Jock ‘n Jill and New Balance, we have top-three prizes at the end of the series. Certificates for the prizes will be available for those who already have a place determined before the finale at registration for the finale, and — if we can easily figure out the results there — for others after the race! If you don’t come to the finale, you can visit SJJ to pick up your certificate after February 20th.

December 7 • GROOT Road Run — Get Rid Of Old Trophies

We will set a table up at registration.  We have a bunch of old trophies and plaques, and you are welcome to bring more! Each division winner will be able to claim a trophy off of the table. Impress your friends with a trophy you won before you were born!

December 21 • Holiday Muddy Cross Country Run

We generally get a bunch of small prizes from Super Jock 'n Jill.  These are distributed by place, and the place list is posted in the area where you return your finish card.  If your card matches the list, you win something! For 2019-2020, there will also be a grande prize of a holiday dinner shopping gift certificate!

January 4 • Alumni Day Road Race

We will score the second road race for your high school team – whether you are a current or past team member, or the parent of a current team member.  The top ten male and female runners will each earn extra points for their team, but every participant for each school earns at least one point for their school!  We give the winning school $150 toward a pizza party, followed by their own team night at Super Jock ‘n Jill!  Recent winners include Redmond HS (2014-15), Edmonds-Woodway HS (2015-16, 2016-17, and 2018-19), and Jackson HS (2017-18).  

January 18 • Cocoa Coffee Cider Cross Country Run

In anticipation of the weather living up to our name, we will set up a hot beverage booth.

February 1 • Old tee-shirt or jersey day

Wear the oldest Winter Grand Prix shirt you have to race, or just the oldest dated jersey or tee-shirt (the year must be printed on the shirt as part of the original design)!  We take pictures for our web site! Okay, we know this favors older runners, but tee-shirts you borrow from Mom or Dad are good, too!
