History

Emerald City Open was started by the UW in 1989. In the mid-1990s, with the advent of the Sundodger Classic, Seattle University was given the meet to host. Club Northwest started helping SU in 1997, and took over in 2017. Since then, we’re proud to continue providing a competitive early-season cross country meet in Seattle, for both collegiate and postcollegiate teams!

Even Alberto Salazar (top middle, Athletics West) destroyed his legs at Emerald City Open in the 80s. Club Northwest’s Jim Reinke is in the CNW singlet, followed by future CNW athlete Adam Leahy in UW singlet, now head coach at Green River College, with future CNWer Sean Messiter off Salazar’s shoulder.
