Overview
Wednesday night workouts are the longest-running workout series that Club Northwest offers. We seek individuals who are team players, train consistently in pursuit of their competitive goals, and meet the time standards listed below.
LOCATION & SCHEDULE
The current location is weekly at Roosevelt High School. We will be at the Green Lake track when there are high school sports games. If this is the case, an announcement will be made on the main workout page.
There are two workout times depending on which event you are training for. See more information in the FAQ below. The first workout time starts at 6:15pm on Wednesday. It is recommended to arrive around 5:45pm to warm up. The second workout time starts at 6:45pm on Wednesday. It is recommended to arrive around 6:15pm to warm up.
track permit fees
To provide reliable track access in the face of increasing conflict with school events, CNW has obtained permits to use the Roosevelt track on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. To cover the ~$10,000 annual cost, starting July 24, athletes attending Tues or Weds nights will be required to pay a track use fee of $50/season, with two seasons per year: Summer/Fall (July-Dec) and Winter/Spring (Jan-June). Click here to pay the Summer/Fall fee.
Athletes who are new to Tuesday or Wednesday night may trial for two weeks before paying the fee.
The fee amount will be set annually to cover exactly the permitting costs, and no more. Members with financial barriers are strongly encouraged to contact a club coach or the VP of Teams to discuss options.
How to apply
CNW members meeting at least one time standard in the table below may apply throughout the year. The committee will review applications in three batches per year. Those dates are January 10th, April 15th and August 15th. Late applications will be held until the next cycle. Accepted members will be notified via email. Members who meet at least one auto time standard may be accepted without waiting for the next window, depending on current group capacity. If you have applied and are waiting to be accepted, you are welcome to attend the Tuesday workout group and Wednesday morning workout in the meantime. We will try to view everyone’s application emails as quickly as we can, but sometimes it takes some time to get through every email.
To apply, download, complete, and return the application linked below by emailing both Tom Cotner and Mark Bloudek.
All runners accepted to Wednesday nights in the past and currently training with us are grandfathered in.
Note that to be grandfathered in, runners must have trained with our group within the past 3 years.
New applicants must meet these standard requirements:
Applicants must be a current, paid up member of Club Northwest and paid the permitting dues for the current season. For applications to be considered during current batch, applicant must be a CNW member. The latter of application date or date joining CNW will be used for the batch date.
Times must occur on a certified course or sanctioned track meet. Virtual races are not considered eligible. The net drop for a marathon must be less than 500 feet and 250 feet for a half marathon. Mile qualifier may be fulfilled by converting 1500m times by multiplying by 1.074.
Eligible times for consideration must be from a race recorded within the past three years from application date.
FAQs
Do I have to re-apply after being accepted into the group? No, if you accepted into Wednesday’s you are always welcome to come. You also may choose to join Tuesday night and Wednesday morning workouts.
How do new members get in without the group reaching capacity? Natural churn in the group regularly creates openings for new members.
When should I apply? Applications may be submitted at any time throughout the year. However, make sure to submit before the application deadline for the next training season (January 10th, April 15th and August 15th).
I don’t meet the time standards today, but I think I’m close. Should I apply for Wednesdays? Due to the capacity limits of our training facilities, we must enforce a group size limit. We established time standards to make this as objective and equitable as possible, and based on these standards we are unable to accept applications not meeting the time standard. However, we encourage you to attend Tuesday nights, Wednesday mornings and/or reach out to our Membership committee to see how CNW can help you reach your goals.
Why are there different workout times? This staggered-start approach is the best solution we have found to minimize track congestion and reduce burden on coaches, while maximizing workout partners and socialization opportunities, and additionally creating the opportunity for race-specific workouts. The stagger amount was specifically chosen to allow for different workout groups to cool down alongside the other group warming up. Following the shared cooldown/warmup, there will be an entire-team meeting for the usual announcements, workout info, etc. For cross country, the workouts will be split up between 6k and 10k workouts. For the spring and summer seasons, workouts times will be broken apart based on whether you are doing marathons, track, or general road races. A table of which workout start time applies to you is below. We encourage you to join the training group that has teammates of similar ability. For example, if you are racing 6k/8k but are seeking more volume or faster training partners, you might elect to join the 10k group. If you’re racing 10k but are coming back from injury, consider the 6k/8k group as you regain fitness. If you’re a Group 3A marathoner, the 6k/8k group will likely have more training partners.
